Marine Fishing – A Maritime Activity

Abstract

The sea is a very large water body which is home for various kinds of creatures and hold large amount of resources. It is very dynamic and has various weather patterns such as strong winds, high waves, tropical cyclones and squally weather. The sea is being used for various activities such as transportation, tourism and for livelihood of the people. These activities are being carried out with the help of various types and sizes of vessels. Marine fishing is one of such activities carried out at sea. The fishing activities are carried out with the help of various types and sizes of fishing vessels from coastal waters to the high seas. Even though, the fishing activates are carried out with different kinds of nets and methods, the environment over which the fishing is carried out plays a major role in carrying out fishing safely and efficiently. The environments on which the marine fishing is carried out are the sea, the vessel and the crew. To efficiently carry out the fishing operation, the crew and the skipper must have a sound knowledge of the sea conditions, navigations on the sea and vessel operation like, vessel manoeuvring, safety of the vessel and crew and well being of the fishermen. Further the vessel’s activities are grouped into various functions and that enables proper planning for teaching and training of the fishermen on operation of the vessels at sea safely and efficiently. The risks involved to the fishermen and the fishing vessel out at sea is not very well projected to the outer world. This paper finds the risks associated with the sea, the vessel and the crew and grouping them into functions. And also it brings out the importance of having sound knowledge of the sea, the vessel and skilled operation of the fishing vessel by the crew for carrying out the marine fishing safely and efficiently.
